Program Highlights:

The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is a 52‐week experiential learning program. The program will help the resident develop core skills in direct patient care primarily in an oncology environment. At the completion of the program, the resident will have the ability to successfully manage an independent clinical practice in any practice setting, and demonstrate competence in leadership, interprofessional collaboration, teaching and project management.

Residency training will occur at various BCCA regional cancer centres. Although most of the time will be spent within the Lower Mainland, the resident will be required to travel to cancer centres outside the Lower Mainland to experience unique practices for some rotations. A travel stipend will be provided.

  • Drug Distribution/IV Admixture
  • Practice Management
  • Drug Information/Evidence Based Medicine
  • Medication Safety
  • Clinical Orientation
  • Direct Patient Care Rotations – Internal Medicine, Inpatient Oncology Care, Ambulatory Oncology Care, Pain and Symptom Management & Palliative Care, Tumour Group Rotations
  • Project

Elective Rotations:

  • Infectious Disease
  • Cardiology
  • Drug Budget Management/Pharmacoeconomics
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant

Minimum required credentials:   BSc(Pharm), eligible for licensure in British Columbia

ORGANIZATION

Type:  BCCA is one of the largest cancer care organizations in Canada and provides a comprehensive cancer control program for residents of British Columbia. It is also a centre of excellence in oncology academia and research, and offers a number of advanced oncology training programs. Currently, there are 5 BCCA Regional Cancer Centres:

  • Vancouver – Vancouver Centre
  • Surrey – Fraser Valley Centre
  • Abbotsford – Abbotsford Centre
  • Victoria – Vancouver Island Centre
  • Kelowna – Centre for the Southern Interior

A sixth centre is planned to open in Prince George in the Fall of 2012 – Centre for the North. In addition, Provincial Pharmacy is a team of specialized pharmacists and support staff that provides expertise in areas including drug information, medication safety, workplace safety regarding hazardous drugs, drug budget management, and development of oncology drug monographs and chemotherapy protocols. Lastly, the BCCA also partners with a collaborative network of hospitals in all BC health authorities to provide chemotherapy services to patients across the province.
