RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Vacation/holiday leave: 3 weeks vacation  

Education/conference leave: Airflight, registration, hotel, and ground transportation provided to attend a major hospital pharmacy conference (e.g., PPC in Toronto, CSHP Western Branches Banff Conference).  Residents also attend the Manitoba Saskatchewan Management Seminar and the CSHP SK Branch AGM, when possible.

Program highlights: Encourages residents to develop knowledge, skills and values required to excel as a practitioner. In striving towards provision of pharmaceutical care, emphasis is placed on identifying, solving, and preventing drug-related problems. Experiential learning environment using practitioner role models is the primary method of education. This philosophy promotes development of competent, progressive practitioners and nurtures future leaders. 12-month program includes series of mandatory immersion and mandatory and elective excursion rotations. Original research project selected by resident must be completed. Supported by contemporary pharmacy services at 3 acute care hospitals, as well as ambulatory and home care settings.

Required Rotations:

Drug Distribution – 5 weeks (RUH or SPH)
Direct Patient Care Skills rotation – 2 weeks

Immersion rotations, required:
Adult medicine – 8 weeks and
Cardiology – 8 weeks or Pediatrics - 8 weeks

Excursion rotations, required:
Drug Information – 2 weeks
Nephrology and Renal Transplantation – 3 weeks
Geriatrics – 3 weeks
Primary care – 3 weeks
Pediatrics – 3 weeks (if pediatric immersion rotation not completed)
Cardiology – 3 weeks (if cardiology immersion rotation not completed)
Practice Management and Drug Use Control – sessions scheduled throughout the year

Excursion rotations, elective:
Critical care – 3 weeks
Rx Files / Chronic Pain Management – 3 weeks
PICU – 3 weeks
NICU – 3 weeks

Other:
Clinical Instructor for Structured Practice Experiences Program – 5 weeks

Minimum required credentials: Baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy
