Program highlights: The Interior Health Pharmacy Practice Residency Program will focus on developing and refining direct patient care, pharmacy practice, project management and leadership skills with the goal of the resident being able to provide comprehensive and focussed patient care in diverse practice settings.

Required Rotations:  

  • Residency Program Orientation (1 week)
  • Clinical Orientation (2 weeks)
  • Direct Patient Care Rotations (28 weeks)
  • Drug Distribution (4 weeks)
  • Management (1 week)
  • Medication Management ( 1 week)
  • Medication Safety (1 week)
  • Pharmacokinetics (1 week)
  • Evidence Based Medicine(1 week)
  • Drug Information (1 week)
  • Toxicology (1 week)
  • Precepting Skills (2 weeks)
  • Project (6 weeks)

Direct Patient Care Rotations:
Residents in our program have the opportunity to develop direct patient care skills in both inpatient and outpatient practice settings.  All direct patient care rotations are  four weeks in duration.  The following rotations are  offered.  Please see www.ihpharmacy.com for more information.

Core Rotations (all residents do these):

  • Medicine (Kelowna General Hospital)
  • Critical Care (Kelowna General Hospital)
  • Cardiology (Kelowna General Hospital)
  • Infectious Diseases (Kelowna General Hospital)

Elective Rotations (residents choose 3):

  • Emergency Medicine (Kelowna General Hospital)
  • Nephrology (Kelowna General Hospital)
  • Rural Medicine ( Kootenay Lake Hospital, Nelson)
  • Ambulatory Care (Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops )
  • General Surgery (East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Cranbrook)
  • Other elective rotations may also be available

Minimum required credentials: B.Sc.(Pharm), eligible for licensure in British Columbia

ORGANIZATION

Type: Interior Health provides health services to a diverse population in the Southern Interior of British Columbia.  It encompasses a large geographic area, from the Thompson-Cariboo to the East Kootenays and includes urban centres, such as Kelowna and Kamloops, as well as smaller towns and rural communities.  Kelowna General Hospital will be the primary site for residency rotations.  It is a tertiary care referral hospital and provides specialty and subspecialty care, including trauma services, critical care, cardiac care, medical and surgical care and ambulatory care.  It is affiliated with the University of British Columbia as a clinical academic teaching site.
Number of beds: Kelowna General Hospital: 341 acute care beds
Site(s):The majority of residency rotations and activities take place at Kelowna General Hospital.  Residents will also have the opportunity to do rotations at other hospitals in Interior Health. These include Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, Kootenay Lake Regional Hospital in Nelson, and East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook.
