RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Type: General

App. deadline: As set each year by the Hospital Pharmacy Residency Forum of Ontario.
Starting date: Late June/Early July.  Program is 56 weeks in duration.
Est. stipend: Approximately $34,600 / year.  Residents provide approximately 180-200 hours of evening coverage at an intern or pharmacist's wage (Average $6,000 per year).

Program highlights: The program is a general program designed to develop confident, self-directed pharmacy practitioners using Pharmaceutical Care as a practice model. Foundation skills provided by compulsory rotations in our regional drug information service,, comprehensive unit does/IV additive drug distributions systems as well as a practice management rotation. Mandatory patient care rotations include general medicine, surgical care and ambulatory care.  Elective patient care rotations include critical care, infectious diseases, neurology, nephrology, cardiology, oncology, mental health, pediatrics, neonatology, transplantation, and various surgical subspecialties. The program features a one week introduction to evidence based practice where residents apply principles of evidence based medicine to evaluate evidence and integrate into every day practice.  Additionally a three to four week elective rotation is offered in evidence based practice which involves completing a systematic review or meta-analysis. The residency research project forms a key component of the residency, and residents are encouraged publish their project in a professional journal.  Residents enhance their presentation skills through regular presentations to pharmacists, physicians, and nurses. Residents participate in a four week practice rotation where they integrate all portions of their training to work as a clinical pharmacist on a defined service.  Residents are provided with funding and time off at attend two conferences annually; the CSHP Summer Education Sessions in August and Professional Practice Conference in February.

Minimum required credentials: Licensed or eligible for licensure in Ontario, excellent communication skills, are self-directed, self-starters and have a desire to become leaders in the profession. Varied pharmacy experience is an asset.
