About our presenters
Dr. Melanie Hnatiuk MD, CCFP, FCFP — Melanie is a family physician and Clinical Associate Professor, working at the South Health Campus Family Medicine Teaching clinic for the last 10 years.  She has been a passionate advocate through her work with the Alberta College of Family Physicians as a Board member, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta as a member of the Competence Committee, as well as numerous other committees and boards. Melanie has recently transitioned to the new role of Lead, Faculty Wellness for the DFM. Melanie’s interests include exploring creative pursuits including narrative-based medicine, as well as spending time in nature with her husband, three daughters, and dog. 

Dr. Trudy Huyghebaert, PharmD, BSc Pharm, CDE, ACPR, APA — Currently, Trudy is the clinical pharmacist for the Department of Family Medicine Teaching Clinics at the University of Calgary/Alberta Health Services.  She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Idaho State University and graduated with Honors.  Prior to her PharmD, she completed her undergraduate pharmacy degree at the University of Alberta and completed a hospital residency at the Ottawa Hospital.  Her clinical areas of interest are evidence-based medicine, sustainable healthcare and chronic disease management in primary care (with a special interest in Diabetes and Chronic pain). Outside of work, she can be found scuba diving in the mountain lakes in the summer, running in Fish Creek Park or spending time with her two daughters (12 and 16) and their crazy labradoodle, Bailey.   

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Review the relevant literature regarding the influence of industry activities on prescribing
2. Discuss ways to mitigate the risks of bias involved when collaborating with Industry activities while leveraging ways to help our patients
3. Recognize potential biases and blind spots of industry relationships and medical professionals
