Program highlights: General residency program involving rotations in drug information, medication use systems, leadership and administration and clinical rotations such as internal medicine, hematology/oncology, blood and marrow transplant, pain and palliative care, neuro oncology, pediatric oncology, and breast cancer. As this is a regional program, rotations may be offered at either the Cross Cancer Institute, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre or other AHS hospital sites. Residents must also complete a research project during the year.

Required Rotations: (duration; site choices): Rotations offer the residents experience in the cancer centres and hospitals in Edmonton and Calgary:
Drug Information: 2 weeks + longitudinal experience; Drug Information North UAH or Drug Information South PLC
Medication Use Systems: 2 weeks; CCI
Leadership and Administration: 2 weeks; CCI
Acute Care Adult Oncology: 4-6 weeks; CCI, Unit 57 FMC
Pain and Palliative Care: 4-6 weeks; CCI, TBCC
Hematology/Oncology: 4-6 weeks; TBCC
Internal Medicine: 4-6 weeks; UAH, MCH, RAH, FMC, PLC
Blood and Marrow Transplant: 4-6 weeks; TBCC
Undergraduate Clinical Precepting: 4 weeks; CCI,TBCC
Residency Research Project: 8 weeks

Elective Rotations: Chosen based on interests of the resident and the availability of the rotations. There is enough time allotted to allow for one elective rotation of 4-6 weeks’ duration. The rotations listed below are a summary of available rotation sites at the present time. There is a possibility that additional rotation sites may open up with the addition of new practice areas.

  • Neuro oncology (TBCC)
  • Breast Cancer (CCI)
  • Pediatric Oncology: (UAH, ACH)
  • Infectious Disease (UAH, RAH)
  • Regional Cancer Centre solid tumour ambulatory oncology (Central Alberta Cancer Centre, Jack Ady Cancer Centre)
