General Awards

The goal of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) Awards Program is to improve patient outcomes by promoting excellence in the practice of pharmacy throughout hospitals and other collaborative healthcare settings. Awards are available, under the following terms of reference, to any Member of CSHP.

The General Awards are presented in recognition of achievements in the field of pharmacy practice in hospitals and healthcare systems. Members are recognized for projects representing one or more of the following achievements:

  • significant innovations and developments in the field of Canadian pharmacy practice in hospitals and other collaborative healthcare settings
  • implementation of a pharmacy program that makes a significant contribution to practice or to patient care in the Member's institution
  • research that contributes to the advancement of patient care, pharmacotherapy or pharmacy practice
  • outstanding achievement in pharmacy practice in hospitals and other collaborative healthcare settings

Applications for the 2018-2019 General Awards Program are being accepted from August 1 to September 30, 2018, through the online submission system at https://cshpawards.msubmit.net/. Selections will be made in November.

Award categories

There are seven general award categories as listed below. Not all awards are offered in any given year. 

Management and Leadership Best Practice Award 

This award will not be offered during the 2018-2019 term.

This award recognizes a project or program implemented in a hospital or healthcare system and meeting one or more of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates significant contributions through management initiatives to improve patient care
  • Demonstrates significant innovations through management initiatives to improve patient care
  • Enables pharmacists to perform activities that enhance pharmaceutical care
  • Advances pharmacy services within the healthcare setting
  • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory. Endorsement is provided via the signature form.
  • Award winners from 2009 to present

New Technology Award

This award will not be offered during the 2018-2019 term.

This award recognizes CSHP Members who have contributed significantly to the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of new technology in an organized health care setting and meeting one or more of the following criteria:

  • Promotes the safe and effective adoption of this new technology at other health facilities in Canada
  • Provides a comprehensive review of the technology within their organization. This review may include a systematic approach to implementation, monitoring resource requirements and/or other outcomes attributable to uptake of the technology among staff and patients
  • May include a comprehensive review of the potential risks and benefits that the new technology introduces to the practice setting
  • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory
  • Award winners from 2017 to present

This award recognizes a project or program implemented in a hospital or healthcare system and meeting one or more of the following criteria:

  • Promotes rational prescribing to enhance patient care
  • Advances healthcare practitioners’ knowledge of drug therapy
  • May include drug utilization evaluations
  • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory. Endorsement is provided via the signature form.
  • Award winners from 2009 to present

This award recognizes a project or program implemented in a hospital or healthcare system that promotes best-practice prescribing and includes outcome measures. Submissions may demonstrate:

  • Improvement in patient outcomes or prescribing through the use of drug evaluations
  • Significant impact on the institution or on pharmacy practice
  • Improvement in the quality of patient care
  • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory. Endorsement is provided via the signature form.
  • Award winners from 2009 to present

This award recognizes a project or program implemented in a hospital or healthcare system and meeting one or more of the following criteria:

  • Evaluates and/or enhances patient safety through safer medication practices
  • Demonstrates a reduction in risk to patients or healthcare workers
  • May include quality improvement tools, educational programs or new technologies
  • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory. Endorsement is provided via the signature form.
  • Award winners from 2009 to present

    Specialties in Pharmacy Practice Award

    This award will not be offered during the 2018-2019 term.

    This award recognizes a project or program implemented in a hospital or healthcare system and meeting one or more of the following criteria: 

    • Relates to a specialty in hospital pharmacy practice (e.g. oncology, cardiology, ambulatory care) 
    • Involves the advancement of knowledge regarding drugs or drug therapy through research relating to pharmacokinetics, pharmacoeconomics, comparative drug trials/investigations, compatibility and stability data, etc.
    • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory.
    • Award winners from 2009 to present

    • Describes innovative methods developed for patient counselling or education
    • Describes innovative methods developed for the education of healthcare professionals
    • Describes the development of a resource tool or educational material that can enhance the practice of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals
    • Endorsement by the hospital or healthcare system where the project or program was implemented is mandatory. Endorsement is provided via the signature form.
