Modernizing Gender, Sex, and Sexual Orientation Data

February 04, 2021

In response to staggering health inequities, Infoway, a national non-profit focused on digital health solutions, has created an action plan to modernize Canada’s gender, sex, and sexual orientation (GSSO) data. To join the national conversation and to support inclusive, affirmative, and culturally competent practices, read the action plan.

Infoway recommends seven transformative actions that health organizations should take to dismantle stigma and lack of knowledge threatening the health of people who identify as sexual and gender minorities (SGM). The plan, created by a team of researchers, practitioners, advocates, and health organizations, aims to improve and standardize the collection and use of GSSO health data. It provides guidelines for using precise, inclusive terminology; training health care staff; and adopting standardized electronic health record systems that enable us to better capture GSSO data. This data will empower us to move towards an SGM-oriented health system. It’s a timely call to action that shows the power of working together across Canada to modernize our data practices.
