Clinical Perspective on Anticoagulation with DOACs in Kidney Disease
Anticoagulation in kidney disease is complex, high-stakes, and often uncertain
Join us August 19 for a clinical deep dive into DOAC use in CKD, where evolving evidence and key pharmacologic differences come together to inform more confident decision-making.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Critically appraise current evidence on the safety and efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
2. Compare and contrast the pharmacology and pharmacokinetic profiles of available DOACs, with emphasis on kidney clearance, dosing considerations, and implications for CKD management.
3. Identify key knowledge gaps and uncertainties in the evidence guiding DOAC use across the spectrum of CKD, highlighting areas for clinical decision making and future research.
About Marisa Battistella
Marisa trained at the University of Toronto, completed her residency at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and earned her PharmD from Idaho State University. She is a Professor, Affliated Scientist at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and a Clinician Scientist at the University Health Network, where she practices in the hemodialysis unit. Her research in pharmaco-nephrology focuses on optimizing medication use in patients with chronic kidney disease, and she has published and presented widely in this area.
