From Classroom to Advanced Clinical Practice: Integrating EPA Across Pharmacy Education

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role and structure of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) in competency-based pharmacy education across undergraduate and postgraduate residency training.
  • Compare strategies for implementing EPAs in both undergraduate pharmacy programs and postgraduate residency programs, including curriculum design, assessment methods, and faculty development. 
  • Identify common challenges and best practices in integrating and assessing EPAs to support learner progression and readiness for independent pharmacy practice.


About Christine Landry
Dr. Christine Landry, BPharm, MSc (ACPR), PharmD is a pharmacist at Hôpital Montfort and practises primarily in critical care. She is also a clinical investigator at the Institut du Savoir Montfort. Her research focusses on pharmacy practice, pharmacy education and French-languages services.  
 
From 2012 to 2022, Dr. Landry coordinated the Hôpital Montfort’s pharmacy residency program for graduate pharmacists, a joint program between The Ottawa Hospital and Hôpital Montfort. She is a member of and evaluator for the Canadian Pharmacy Residency Board (CPRB), responsible for the accreditation of pharmacy residency programs across Canada. Since 2018, she has been the project lead in the development and implementation of the new undergraduate Doctor of Pharmacy program (PharmD) at the University of Ottawa. Since 2023, she is an assistant professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Ottawa and the Director of the PharmD program. She still practices as a part-time hospital pharmacist and supervises pharmacy students and residents. 

About Anne-Julie Frenette
Anne-Julie Frenette is a full Clinical Professor who has done her M. Sc. (Pharmaceutical practice) followed by a speciality in critical care. She completed her PhD in medical research during which she worked on organ donor management. She is also an Associate Researcher at the  Research Center of the Hospital of the Sacred Heart of Montreal. Her major research projects include organ donation, head trauma, sedation, analgesia and delirium in ICU and adverse drug reactions. Her expertise mainly lies in the fields of pharmacotherapy (critical care) , clinical and epidemiological research. She is the former director of M.Sc and she principally now focuses her university career on education and learning.

About Melanie Danilak
Melanie Danilak graduated from the University of Alberta in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and completed an accredited pharmacy residency with a focus on oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute in 2009.  She obtained additional prescribing authorization from the Alberta College of Pharmacists in 2012.  In 2016, she completed a Master of Education in Health Sciences Education at the University of Alberta.  Melanie's prior experience includes several years as a pharmacy educator in oncology as well as a clinical practice leader.  Within these roles, she has acted as the residency coordinator for the Edmonton Zone and Cancer programs within Alberta Health Services.  Her clinical practice has included breast cancer as well as rheumatology.  Her current role is as an assessment developer with the Alberta College of Pharmacy.  In addition to volunteering with the CPRB, Melanie is an active member with the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners.
