Advocacy in Action: May 6

May 6, 2025

What's happened

April 30, Meeting with ASOP Canada

CSHP attended ASOP Canada's quarterly meeting which covered topics relating to the U.S. executive order on bulk pharmaceutical importation and its potential risks to Canada’s drug supply. Discussions also touched on pharmaceutical tariffs and the evolving trade policies impacting cross-border medicine access.

May 1, Multistakeholder meeting on the impact of tariffs on health product access

CSHP is participating in a biweekly multilateral meeting on the impact of tariffs on access to health products in Canada. As the situation continues to develop, Health Canada is facilitating open dialogue to address emerging challenges and explore potential mitigation strategies. This discussion will bring together key players from the pharmacy industry, healthcare, and patient advocacy groups.

What's happening

May 1, Advocacy Brief on Cyclomydril® eyedrops

As stock depletes, CSHP is urging Health Canada and Alcon to collaborate on maintaining access to Cyclomydril® and to recognize their responsibility to ensure availability of low-volume but high-impact medications. In the interim, CSHP asks community and hospital pharmacies to consider compounding this medication only as a last resort, and only if they meet the necessary standards for high-risk sterile compounding. The full advocacy brief will be released soon, and members are encouraged to follow CSHP on social media to be notified when it's published.

What's worth repeating

April to May, Cannabidiol consultation

As part of its 2024-2026 Forward Regulatory Plan, Health Canada is developing a regulatory pathway to authorize certain health products containing cannabidiol (CBD) for sale without a prescription. The consultation, Towards a pathway for health products containing cannabidiol, is open for feedback on packaging, labeling, place of sale, advertising/ promotion, and post-marketing surveillance.

CSHP plans to submit a national response and is seeking member expertise. Please send insights to [email protected] by May 26, 2025.
