CSHP extends its condolences on the passing of Alfred Gin, a highly respected infectious diseases clinical pharmacist whose career was rooted at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg. Alfred earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Manitoba in 1984, completed a hospital pharmacy residency at HSC in 1985, and received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988.
With over 30 years of infectious diseases practice, Alfred contributed to antimicrobial stewardship, clinical service, education, and research. He was also an award-winning WRHA Pharmacy Residency Program preceptor and held academic appointments with the University of Manitoba. Alfred was an excellent mentor to colleagues both within and external to pharmacy; he always took time to help others understand new concepts and would help people hone their critical thinking skills through his kind approach to coaching.
As the Residency Coordinator for the WRHA Pharmacy Residency Program, Alfred always encouraged his residents to give back to the profession. Alfred modelled this by volunteering with CSHP and his dedication to CSHP was substantial and wide-ranging. Nationally, he contributed through the Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Network and served as a manuscript reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy. He was a speaker at several PPC and Banff Seminar conferences. Within CSHP’s Manitoba Branch, he gave generously of his time and expertise in roles including Branch President, Awards Committee member, Education Committee member, Webmaster, Branch website developer, SES Planning Committee member, and Communications liaison. His service helped strengthen both member engagement and the sharing of professional knowledge across the Society.
Alfred will be warmly remembered by colleagues and learners for his generosity, curiosity, thoughtful clinical perspective, and deep commitment to patient care, education, hospital pharmacy, infectious diseases practice, and CSHP.
