Overview
The Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy (CJHP) provides strategic, academic, and editorial leadership to advance the journal's mission: to publish high-quality, peer-reviewed research and practice innovations that enhance pharmacy practice in healthcare systems. As the senior volunteer editor, the Editor-in-Chief ensures the journal’s scientific integrity, editorial independence, and alignment with CSHP’s values of excellence, diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and innovation. This is a volunteer position with a small annual honorarium.
Key Responsibilities
- Editorial Leadership
- Define and maintain the journal’s editorial scope and strategic direction, ensuring alignment with evolving priorities in pharmacy and healthcare in Canada.
- Uphold high standards of scientific and editorial quality, as well as editorial independence, to ensure integrity, rigour, and credibility in all published content.
- Ensure the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility are upheld in editorial processes—especially in recruitment and peer engagement—while maintaining the highest standards of scientific quality.
- Ensure timely processing of manuscripts, clear communication with authors regarding manuscript status, efficient rejection of manuscripts not selected for publication, and the on-schedule release of accepted manuscripts. Make final decisions on manuscript acceptance.
- Ensure ethical conduct in publishing, including but not limited to adherence to the Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE) guidelines; International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations; and Council of Science Editors (CSE) standards.
- Oversee processes for conflicts of interest, allegations of misconduct, authorship disputes, and ethics compliance.
- Oversee periodic review and development of editorial policies and practices including policies for corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern, and transparency of peer review and publication processes.
- Oversee periodic review of the author guidelines, ensuring they are current and aligned with best practices in research reporting, transparency, and ethical standards.
- Fostering Quality Submissions and Emerging Topics
- Collaborate with the Editorial Board to encourage high-quality manuscript submissions from researchers, clinicians, educators, and policymakers both within Canada and internationally.
- Assist in identifying current and emerging topics of interest to help guide submissions and maintain the journal’s relevance.
- Support efforts to welcome diverse perspectives and topics.
- Editorial Team Management
- Lead and mentor the Deputy Editor, Associate Editors and Editorial Board, actively developing future editorial leaders and succession planning.
- Chair quarterly Editorial Board meetings and foster a collaborative editorial culture.
- Foster succession planning and build capacity by mentoring and developing qualified editorial talent to ensure continuity of leadership, operational stability, and sustained journal quality.
- Strategic Development
- Collaborate with CSHP and the external publication contract team to grow journal readership, impact, and reach and ensure a robust pipeline of author submissions.
- Champion initiatives to enhance CJHP’s visibility, reach, and impact, including strategies to improve indexing, citation metrics, readership engagement, and overall journal performance.
- Engage with national and international audiences to position CJHP as a thought leader in healthcare-systems pharmacy.
- Operational Collaboration
- Work closely with the external publication contract team to maintain efficient workflows for manuscript handling, production, and publication.
- Monitor and report key journal performance metrics (e.g., acceptance rates, review timelines, readership and citation metrics) and use these data to guide strategic improvements.
- Support CSHP’s budgeting and resource planning discussions for the CJHP as needed.
- Ensure continuity during transitions of key editorial roles.
- Governance and Reporting
- Report twice yearly to the CSHP Board of Directors on journal performance, challenges, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with CSHP on high-level policy development.
- Participate in the selection process for new editorial team members, including future Editor-in-Chief appointments.
- Other tasks needed to ensure the standards and reputation of the CJHP and the Society are maintained.
Qualifications
- Professional degree in pharmacy; postgraduate training required.
- Significant experience as a published author and peer reviewer in scholarly journals.
- Prior editorial experience is mandatory; experience with CJHP is an asset.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
- Vision for the future of healthcare-systems pharmacy publishing with understanding of publication ethics and scholarly publishing standards (COPE, ICMJE, CSE).
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in editorial practices.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 5–8 hours per week, variable depending on manuscript volume and strategic projects. A good portion of the time is taken with the day-to-day responsibilities of CJHP operations such as screening submissions for relevance/acceptability, assigning submissions to AEs for review based on AE expertise, etc.
Term and Transition
- This is a five-year term appointment anticipated to begin January 2026, with the option for a one-time renewal. A six-month notice of retirement is expected to ensure leadership continuity and a well-supported transition to the next Editor-in-Chief.
